The painters' paradise

Four kilometres from Florenville, the lovely little village of Chassepierre — "Tchespire" in Walloon — offers a remarkable architectural ensemble.

The name Chassepierre comes from the Latin Casa petrea, "stone house". Saint-Martin church, built in 1702, stands at the centre of an old cemetery and features a baroque tower. Just below it, the Trou des Fées is a network of underground galleries dug by hand into the cron, the local limestone.

The Florenville–Bouillon road overlooks the village and its typical narrow streets, offering a magnificent panorama over one of the finest bends of the Semois and over the first, particularly steep, cuesta.

A few years ago the former village school was happily converted into a youth-tourism hostel (C.B.T.J.). The building adjoins the fine and spacious Wanson hall, where all sorts of events can be held: playground, tennis, barbecue and more. At this spot you can still see the piers and abutments of the bridge of the Marbehan – Sainte-Cécile light railway, destroyed in 1940.
